Tested by PGA coach Ross Eves, the Visio Tempo Stick Plus is a putting tempo and pace trainer that costs £499 (around $640 for US buyers, billed in GBP). It's built around an LED light strip that connects to your phone. In the app you input the green speed (Stimp), your target putt distance and your tempo, and it gives you back a stroke length and a tempo to match. The lights then act as a live guide: you watch the strip to see exactly how far to take the putter back and through, and at what pace. There's an audio cue alongside it too, so you get the rhythm by feel as well as by eye.
What makes it genuinely useful is that it makes pace control concrete. Most golfers have no real idea how far to take the stroke back and through for a given distance — and as a coach, that's one of the hardest things to teach, because "how hard do I hit it?" is such a vague feel. The Visio just shows you.
From a biomechanics and learning standpoint, this is where it earns its keep for me. Pace is an internal feel that's notoriously hard to coach with words. The Visio replaces "hit it about this hard" with an external visual and audio reference the player can actually see and hear — and that kind of immediate, external feedback is exactly what helps a movement pattern stick. Students tend to get it far faster than they do off verbal cues alone.
The distance-control work is where I've got the most out of it. Because you set the Stimp, you can calibrate to green speeds you don't normally play. Through Open qualifying this year the greens were quicker than my home greens — mine run around 8, so I set the Visio to 10 to get a frame of reference for the pace I'd face. I did the same before playing in America, where the greens were nearer 12, practising first to feel how much shorter my stroke needed to be. Being able to rehearse a green speed before you ever step on it is the standout.
It also works indoors, which matters if you can't easily practise long putts. I was rolling 60-footers in my hallway with it — distances you'd normally never get to rehearse. As a teaching tool it's excellent: it gives students a visual and audible anchor for something most of them have only ever guessed at.
