If you'll commit to it, this is the best speed-training system out there. The app, the programming and the Grit score keep you accountable in a way cheaper sticks simply don't. It works — expect small, non-linear gains that add up over months, not overnight. Just budget for the radar and the subscription, and don't blindly chase speed at the expense of your sequencing.

Tested by PGA coach Ross Eves, the Stack System is a variable-inertia swing-speed training system that costs $299 (£250) for the training club, plus a compatible speed radar and — after a free first year — an ongoing app subscription of around $129 (£95) a year.

What makes the Stack different is who is behind it. It was devised by Dr Sasho MacKenzie, one of golf's leading biomechanists, alongside PING's Marty Jertson. As a coach with my own background in biomechanics, that pedigree is exactly why I rate it — the programming is genuinely research-led, not marketing.

The build is premium through and through. It's shorter than something like a SuperSpeed stick, which I actually prefer because it's a bit easier to swing, it's slightly larger in the head, the multi-compound grip is lovely, and the weights feel high quality. Everything about it feels like a proper bit of kit.

You do need a speed radar to use the full system. You can pair it with a PRGR, a Golf Buddy or the Shot Scope LM1, but if you haven't already got one I'd personally buy the Stack Radar — it's really good and links over Bluetooth, so the whole thing becomes a slick, hands-free system.

How it works: you complete a baseline session, it puts you on the Foundation program, and once you pass that it customises around your goals. With a warm-up, each session is about 20-30 minutes, two to three times a week, so it's a real commitment like any speed training.

Does it work? Yes. Over-speed training works, and I typically gain around 5% clubhead speed when I use it. Being honest, I've never been able to run the full program continuously — I have colitis and can flare up, so my speed training is a bit spotty. But I can always tell: off the Stack I drop to about 105-107 mph max, and within two to three weeks of using it I'm back up around 112, with a touch more on top if I keep at it. Gains aren't linear — think of it like the stock market, trending upwards over time, not overnight.

A coaching note most people miss: don't just throw everything at max speed. Because you've got the radar giving feedback, some golfers actually swing more efficiently and their technique improves — but others just get faster and messier and make their biomechanics worse. Stay conscious of what you're trying to do in the swing. For me, going faster I tend to get quick and narrow at the top, so I use a little feel of a pause to sequence better.

What I love is the programming. The fact it tells you what to do on which day is the real unique selling point, and the Grit score genuinely improves adherence — you notice when you've skipped a session, and I think that accountability is a big reason the Stack is so popular. You only carry one stick, the progress tracking is motivating and shareable, and if you've got the Stack Radar you also unlock Stack Putting and Stack Wedging. Customer service is excellent too — a lot of the time it's Sasho replying to you directly.

The honest downsides: you need a separate radar, which can feel like a faff, and the subscription after year one will put some people off. I'd reframe the subscription as an adherence fee — people who put money down tend to commit, whereas cheaper one-off sticks often get used once and abandoned.

If the full cost is too much, the SuperSpeed Golf System is a cheaper route that does a lot of what the

Stack does — you just buy the sticks, no radar needed, though it has its own subscription option. I prefer the Stack for the guided programs and the commitment it builds. Use code rosseves at SuperSpeed Golf.

Optimise your sessions: warm up properly, wear proper golf shoes, and train on grass or a mat rather than concrete. The whole point is to stimulate your central nervous system, so don't do it straight after a heavy gym workout — before is better. And if you've got injuries or niggles, I wouldn't speed train at all until they've settled.

If you want a clear answer: it works, and if you'll commit, it's the best speed-training system out there. It's the price of a new driver — and most people happily pay a few hundred for a driver that adds 15-30 yards. This will get you there too.

Cons

  • Adaptive programs that tell you exactly what to train each day — the real standout

  • Grit score genuinely improves adherence and keeps you accountable

  • Only one stick to carry, and it unlocks Stack Putting and Stack Wedging with the radar

  • Motivating, shareable progress tracking and excellent customer service (often from Sasho himself)

  • It works — real, measurable clubhead-speed and distance gains

  • Needs a separate speed radar to use the full system

  • Ongoing subscription after the free first year puts some people off

  • Premium price — you're paying for the whole system, not just a stick

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does the Stack System actually work?
Yes. Over-speed training is proven and the Stack works. In my own testing my clubhead speed drops to around 105-107 mph when I'm off it and climbs back to about 112 within two to three weeks of training. Gains aren't linear — think stock market, trending upwards over months rather than overnight.

How much does the Stack System cost?
The training club is $299 (£250). You'll also need a compatible speed radar, and after a free first year there's an ongoing app subscription of around $129 (£95) a year.

Do you need a radar for the Stack System?
Yes, you need a speed radar to use the full system. I'd recommend the Stack Radar as it links over Bluetooth, but a PRGR, Golf Buddy or Shot Scope LM1 will also work.

Who is the Stack System for, and who should skip it?
It's for committed golfers who want measurable clubhead-speed and distance gains and will train two to three times a week. Skip it if you're injury-prone or budget-conscious — the SuperSpeed Golf System is a cheaper alternative.

How long do Stack System sessions take?
About 20-30 minutes with a warm-up, two to three times a week. It's a genuine commitment like any speed training.

Is there a Stack System discount code?
Yes — use code EVESGOLF for 10% off at The Stack System.

Stack System vs SuperSpeed — which is better?
Both work. The Stack's edge is the adaptive programs and the Grit score that build adherence; SuperSpeed is cheaper and needs no radar. I prefer the Stack for the guided programs and the commitment it creates.
