Tested by PGA coach Ross Eves, the Shot Scope PRO ZR is the brand's premium, most durable laser rangefinder, and it costs £299.99 ($299.99 in the US). Pick it up and it's properly solid, more like a Bushnell than anything else in the Shot Scope range. That's down to the DuraShield HardShell, a metal body that adds a bit of weight and a lot of reassurance. The build quality really is excellent.
It has a dual red/black display (an LCD with red/black dual optics), so you can toggle the colour to whatever reads best for the light you're in. The aiming reticle is a small, clean circle that makes it genuinely easy to find the flag. The slope switch is nice and solid, and it's IPX5 water-resistant, so it'll shrug off a wet UK round no problem.
On accuracy it's superb. I've compared it against a Bushnell (which I treat as the industry benchmark) and it's really, really close, maybe a yard off at most, and if anything it reads a yard long on the odd occasion. If I'm honest I'd say it's even more accurate than the excellent PRO L5 I reviewed. It's very stable, and the flag lock is quick and confident.
The thing I flagged as a slight weakness on the PRO L5 was the lock vibration, it felt a touch soft. On the PRO ZR that jolt is much sturdier, much more like a premium Bushnell. When it grabs the flag you know about it, and that confidence matters when you're over a number.
Where it gets interesting is the price. At full RRP it starts bumping up against genuinely premium rangefinders, and even against older or discounted Bushnells. So my honest advice: if the ZR is a similar price to a discounted premium Bushnell, I'd probably lean Bushnell, or save money and take the PRO L5. If you specifically want a Bushnell, it's also worth looking at older models or a used one on eBay, because you'll land at a similar price point.
But the ZR is very often found on a deal, and when it is, especially with 15% off using my code, it becomes a seriously attractive premium rangefinder. Buy it on a good price and you'll be delighted.
As a PGA pro I'd happily use this in competition and open qualifying, the accuracy holds up completely. So if you're a serious golfer rather than an occasional club player, don't be put off by it being cheaper than the big premium brands. If the PRO L5 is about 80% of a Bushnell, this feels more like 96%, it just sits in an awkward spot in the market because it's nearly premium money for a not-quite-premium-brand badge.
